Weekend in Indy - Recap

Mike Robertson

Bill Hartman

I have been super busy already starting this week. I got in late Sunday from Indy and have been on the go between clients and class. I just wanted to type of a short summary in bullet fashion of my weekend in Indy.

• Mike and Bill where very welcoming to their facility.
• You have to love a gym that has no machines and 3 power racks. Freaking awesome.
• When I walked in the gym I heard some Tupac blasting from the speakers. It felt like home (my home gym that is).
• I learned a ton of information. Here are a few key points from the gym floor:

 We need another power rack (or two) at our facility.
 Lacrosse balls are the shit.
 Bill Hartman is some kind of superhuman (at least when it comes to his assessments).
 iFast clients are strong (and one dresses a little funny).

NO ASSHATS AT IFAST

 Picked up some great new “cue words” for coaching.
 Picked up some great new mobility and warm up techniques.
 Learned some new exercises.
 I love the prowler

• I also got to meet Tony Gentilcore. He is cool guy and strong (with some freaky ass arms).
• I got to train after hours at the iFast facility. Had a great training session and got to wrap it up with my first experience with the Prowler (in a 50 ft. rope pull/Prowler push).
• We ate at a place called, Fogo de Chao, which serves up 13 different types of meat as long as you want it. Talk about a post workout feast!
• Everyone in Indy where very friendly and a blast to hang out with.

This past weekend was definitely a success! It was great to be surrounded by so many successful and smart coaches/trainers and like minded people. I will be making a trip back up to Indy again for sure.

Indy Here I Am

I just arrived in Indianapolis, Indiana. I just unpacked my bag and got my room situated. Just popped the top of a Spike, pulled Pandora Radio (www.pandora.com) to listen to for a second before I head out, and answered a few emails and other daily task.

What am I doing in Indy?

I took off today to travel up here and observe and learn from some of the most knowledgeable and successful trainers/coaches in the business. Mike Robertson was gracious enough to allow me to come observe his and Bill Hartman’s iFast facility in action. I also found out that another brilliant mind, Tony Gentilcore (co-owner Cressey Performance) from Boston MA will be in town this weekend.

Stay Tuned for an update!

A Can of Spike and a Piece of Paper

This morning I didn’t have my normal class due to spring break. With this extra time I have decided to catch up some on assignments that are due in the upcoming weeks. Before I begin I have started sipping on a Spike and jotting down some “Spike induced” thoughts:

• This Saturday I will be competition in my first strongman competition. It is in Mt. Vernon IL. I am ready to give this sport a try. I think this is the first sport I have competed in, in my life that I am a “Lightweight”. I mean seriously, how many other sports does a 200 pound person get called a “Lightweight”?

• Next weekend I will be making a trip up to Indianapolis to learn from some of the smartest in the Industry. Mike Robertson and Bill Hartman co-own Indianapolis Fitness and Sports Training (iFast). Mike also informed me that Tony Gentilcore will be in town the same weekend. Tony is a co-owner of Cressey Performance in Boston MA. I am really looking forward to this trip.

• For anyone who has a lengthy drive everyday or even once a week I recommend listening to some podcast. If you are interested in fitness/nutrition podcast I would try:

Just because you measure your food, it doesn't mean its healthy.

• People need to pay closer attention to the amount of food they are eating. I saw an interesting video from Leigh Peele last night. She took two foods, oats and peanut butter. She then measured out what looks like a typical person’s measurement (slightly rounded scoop) of ½ cup of oats that should equal 40g in weight 150 calories. The rounded scoop equaled 57g and was 214 calories. She then scoops out a spoonful of peanut butter (just slightly above the rim of the measuring spoon). The serving should have been 200 calories for 32g. Instead it was 282 calories and 45g in weight. There was an 82 calorie different here, added to the 64 calorie difference from the oats and that is 146 extra calories. If that was eaten together at two meals in a day you are looking at an extra 292 calories over budget for that day. If you are trying to lose fat by trying to eat at a 500 calorie a day deficit but are actually at a 208 calorie deficit it would take a year to lose 21 pounds. Now think about this, what if you are trying to maintain your weight and are accidently overeating by 292 calories a day. You would gain 30 pounds that year. If you think you can’t lose body fat it is time you re check your methods.

Just Say No to BroScience

BroScience: Bro-Sci-ence - n.

Word of mouth knowledge passed off as fact, primarily among bodybuilders + weightlifters. Generally spouted most by guys who have used loads of steroids and are huge. They usually have no idea what is happening to their bodies and then share that same cluelessness with others who make the false assumption that their experience means that they have knowledge.

Examples:

"Bro, ya gotta slam that new MuscleTech shit, Cell-Vapor-Shock-Test, within 7 seconds of finishing your last set of squat rack curls. Otherwise, you'll go straight catabolic."

"Yo boy you gotta do high weights and low reps to cut. Spring break is coming up and I'm gonna be shredded baby"

"Dawg, I can't lift with you this month, I am cutting my rest down to 10 seconds between sets. Im getting ripped abz for tha summa,"

Strongman Training

I have been super busy with school, training clients, and training myself. I haven't had much time for writing and updating my blog. I decided to post a little video of Shane Solomon, Derek Stone, and I doing some strongman training. Derek is competiting in April in Chicago. Shane and I are competiting in St. Louis on April 25th. Training is going good and getting intense. Enjoy my mad video editing skillz (yes I said "mad" and spelled skills with a "z"). This training session we performed log clean and press, keg carry, axel deadlifts and loading the stones.
